Gamelan

Gamelan is a traditional form of ensemble music from the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia. I am a member of a Chicago-based Javanese gamelan ensemble called the Friends of the Gamelan. We meet once a week at a rehearsal space in Pilsen to study and perform music from Central Java.

Here is an excellent recording of a well-known piece titled Gendhing Bondhet Ketawang Pucung Wuyung performed by Riris Raras Irama:

And here's a listening guide:

  • (0:00 - 0:50) Pathetan — an unmetered section that introduces and establishes the pathet (mode) of the piece, which in this case is pelog nem.
  • (0:50 - 3:09) Bawa — another unmetered section that reinforces the pathet and leads into the main section of the piece. The first gong note signals the end of the bawa and the beginning of the next section.
  • (3:09 - 23:54) Gendhing Bondhet — the main section of the piece broken up into three subsections: merong, umpak and inggah. After the inggah has been repeated a few times, the kendhang (drum) signals to the rest of the ensemble to move into the next section.
  • (23:54 - 27:32) Ketawang Pucung Wuyung —
  • (27:32 - 28:15) Pathetan — a final unmetered section that further reinforces the pathet and allows the listener to reflect on the piece.
